Active cases of Covid-19 infection in India continued to fall as India reported less than 60,000 new infections for six consecutive days.

Authorities reported over 53,000 fresh cases in 24 hours taking the total tally in the world’s second-most populous nation above 78 lakh, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Oct. 23. This includes more than 70 lakh patients who have recovered and nearly 1.18 lakh deaths.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed cases: 78,14,682
  • Active cases: 6,80,680
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 70,16,046
  • Deaths: 1,17,956
  • Fresh cases in 24 hours: 53,370
  • One-day recoveries: 67,549
  • One-day deaths: 650

The slower pace of daily infections and an improved recovery rate kept active cases below the 7-lakh-mark for a second straight day. India's active caseload had crossed 10 lakh in mid-September.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Friday said the next three months are going to be decisive in determining the coronavirus situation in the country as he urged people to follow Covid appropriate behaviour in the coming festival season and winter months.

He also highlighted the improvement in the Covid parameters. “From recording over 95,000 Covid-19 cases in a day, they have been substantially reduced to less than 55,000 per day. The recovery rate of India is nearing 90%. The Case Fatality Rate is also declining. CFR stands at 1.51% and is moving towards the target of being less than 1%," he said adding the doubling rate has increased to 97.2 days.

Global Update

Australia is considering reopening state borders in time for Christmas, and the state of New South Wales reported no new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases for a second straight day.

U.S. daily cases exceeded 70,000 for the first time since late July. Hard-hit Mexico raised its coronavirus alert in several states amid a rise in cases.

Globally, cases surpassed 42 million with more than 1.1 million dead.
