Coronavirus India Updates: Over 35,000 New Cases Take Active Infections Above 2.5 Lakh
Fresh cases of Covid-19 in India rose to the highest in over three months, taking active infections above 2.5 lakh once again.
Authorities detected more than 35,000 new cases in the last 24 hours, for the first time since Dec. 6, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on March 18. The country reported about 17,700 recoveries in the same period.
More than 170 people lost their lives to the disease in a day, taking the total coronavirus-related fatalities above 1.59 lakh.
- Total coronavirus cases: 1,14,74,605
- Active cases: 2,52,364
- Cured/discharged/migrated: 1,10,63,025
- Deaths: 1,59,216
- New cases in 24 hours: 35,871
- Recoveries in a day: 17,741
- Deaths in a day: 172
- Total vaccinations: 3,71,43,255
- Vaccinations in last 24 hours: 20,78,719
India has administered more than 3.7 crore vaccination shots since the immunisation drive began in January. Over 20 lakh beneficiaries were given the jab in the last 24 hours.
But that still accounts for about 7% of the country’s initial target of administering 500 million doses by July end, IndiaSpend reported. Authorities will need to give 3.65 million shots per day for the remaining 137 days to vaccinate 250 million people with two doses.
Serum Institute’s Adar Poonawalla has warned against vaccine nationalism in countries, including the U.S. and India. Governments holding tight to their supplies and restricting access to materials is likely to derail World Health Organization’s plan to deliver 2 billion doses to poorer and middle-income nations in 2021, he said.
