Coronavirus Update: Active Cases Continue To Climb As India Embarks On Phase II Of Vaccinations

Active Covid-19 cases in India rose for the fifth straight day, stoking fears of a second wave and renewed restrictions, even as the country embarks on the second phase of immunisation drive.

Authorities reported 15,500 new cases in 24 hours according to the health ministry's update as of 8 a.m. on Mar. 1, 2021. That’s higher than the nearly 11,300 recoveries in the same period, taking active cases near 1.7 lakh.

Fresh cases dropped below 16,000 for the first time in five days.

India also reported more than a 100 deaths for the sixth day in a row, taking the total tally above 1.57 lakh. Total deaths now account for 1.41% of the over 1.11 crore coronavirus cases detected in the country.

India administered 1,43,01,266 vaccine doses to healthcare and frontline workers in phase I of the immunisation programme. The second phase of inoculations begin today, where senior citizens and those above the age of 45 with comorbidities will be able to get vaccinated.

Prime Minister Modi Takes First Dose Of Covid-19 Vaccine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took his first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine at AIIMS and appealed to all those who are eligible to get inoculated.

Modi was administered Bharat Biotech's COVAXIN, PTI reported citing sources.

The government had announced on Wednesday that everyone above 60 years of age and those over 45 years with comorbidities will be able to get Covid-19 vaccine from March 1 for free at government facilities and for a charge at many private hospitals.

Citizens will be able to register and book an appointment for vaccination, anytime and anywhere, using the Co-WIN 2.0 portal or through other IT applications such as Aarogya Setu.
