Coronavirus India Updates: Active Covid-19 Caseload Drops To 2.24 Lakh
India's active coronavirus caseload continued to decline even as the country prepares to roll out vaccines to stem the world's second-worst outbreak.
Active Covid-19 cases dipped to 2.24 lakh, as of 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 9, according to data released by the union health ministry. India reported 18,222 new cases in the last 24 hours taking the total caseload to 1.04 crore.
The national recovery rate rose to 96.41%.
Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 1,04,31,639
Active cases: 2,24,190
Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 18,222
One-day recoveries: 19,253
One-day deaths: 228
Total recoveries crossed the 1-crore-mark on Jan. 7 while the nation's death toll crossed the 1.5-lakh-mark on Jan. 6.
A total of 18.02 crore samples have been tested so far -- 9.16 lakh of them on Friday, PTI reported citing Indian Council of Medical Research.

President-elect Joe Biden says he’ll distribute more of the available doses of coronavirus vaccines, as the U.S. surpassed 4,000 daily fatalities for the first time.
New York state will begin to expand eligibility for the vaccine beyond front-line health-care workers to include people over 75, police officers, firefighters and others. London’s mayor declared an emergency as the U.K. reported record fatalities. Germany also reported the most daily deaths since the start of the pandemic. Iran banned U.S. and U.K. vaccinations.
Globally over 8.86 crore people have been infected with coronavirus while over 19 lakh have died, as of Saturday morning.
States Adding Maximum Cases
Kerala reported 5,142 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to over 8 lakh. Maharashtra added 3,693 new infections, pushing the total number of confirmed cases to over 19.6 lakh.
