Coronavirus India Updates: Total Tally Nears 65 Lakh With More Than 1 Lakh Dead

More than one lakh people in India are dead due to Covid-19 as the country continues to witness the fastest rate of infections in the world.

Authorities reported nearly 80,000 new cases in 24 hours taking the total tally near 65 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 3. However, active cases remained below the 9.5-lakh mark, as daily infections slowed down from the peak.

With more than one lakh people dead, India ranks third among countries with the most Covid-19 casualties. But if you calculate the death rate per 1,00,000 population, India ranks tenth.

Global Update

Former White House adviser Kellyanne Conway tested positive for Covid-19, as did Republican Senator Thom Tillis. President Donald Trump went to hospital for a “few days” for coronavirus treatment.

A top World Health Organization official said the White House outbreak constituted a cluster and needs to be properly investigated. Democratic nominee Joe Biden tested negative, as did several senior administration officials including Vice President Mike Pence.

Globally cases surpassed 34.4 million; deaths exceeded 1.02 million.
