Covid-19 cases in India crossed 70 lakh, climbing at the fastest pace in the world, even as the outbreak showed signs of slowing earlier in the week.

India added over 74,383 fresh cases in the last 24 hours taking the total tally to more than 70.5 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 11. This includes more than 1.08 lakh deaths and nearly 60.8 lakh who have recovered.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 70,53,806

  • Active cases: 8,67,496

  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 60,77,976

  • Deaths: 1,08,334

  • Fresh cases in 24 hours: 74,383

  • One-day recoveries: 89,154

  • One-day deaths: 918

Active coronavirus cases in India remained below the 9-lakh-mark.

Still, India is on track to overtake the U.S. (77.5 lakh cases) as the country with the most cases. That comes when the nation is preparing for the fifth phase of unlocking the economy by allowing schools, cinemas and entertainment parks to reopen from Oct. 15.

Global Update

Global cases of Covid-19 topped 36.9 million, including 1.07 million deaths. Yet, Covid’s comeback in many countries is bigger but less deadly, at least for now.

France reported record new Covid-19 cases, while U.S. added most infections in more than two weeks, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg.

President Donald Trump made his first public appearance since being hospitalized for Covid-19. Germany confirmed the most daily virus-related deaths since May.
