Covid-19 cases in India continued to climb at the fastest pace in the world even as the outbreak showed signs of slowing earlier in the week.

India added over 70,000 fresh cases in the last 24 hours taking the total tally to just a shade below 70 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 10. This includes over 1.07 lakh deaths and nearly 60 lakh patients who have recovered.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 69,79,423
  • Active cases: 8,83,185
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 59,88,822
  • Deaths: 1,07,416
  • Fresh cases in 24 hours: 73,272
  • One-day recoveries: 82,753
  • One-day deaths: 926

In a somewhat positive turn, active coronavirus cases in India fell below the 9-lakh-mark for the first time in a month on Friday.

Still, India remains on a trajectory to overtake the U.S. as the country with the most cases, as infections are likely to cross 70 lakh by Sunday.

The central government is pushing to for the fifth phase of unlocking the economy by allowing schools, cinemas and entertainment parks to reopen from Oct. 15.

Globally, cases crossed 36.5 million leaving over 1.06 million dead as of Friday night.

Europe’s leaders are ramping up efforts to force tougher local restrictions amid a surge in coronavirus cases across the region. China joined a World Health Organization-backed vaccine effort, stepping in to fill a void in global health leadership after U.S. President Donald Trump spurned the program. Outbreaks from New Jersey to North Dakota strained health care in parts of the U.S., less than a month before the general election.
