Confirmed cases of Covid-19 continued to rise in India albeit at a slower pace, defying concerns that the festive season could lead to an influx.

India added 45,903 fresh cases in a matter of 24 hours, taking the total tally to over 85.5 lakh in the world’s second-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Nov. 9. This took the active cases to 5.09 lakh in the country.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 85,53,657
  • Active cases: 5,09,673
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 79,17,373
  • Deaths: 1,26,611
  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 45,903
  • One-day recoveries: 48,405
  • One-day deaths: 490

Daily additions have remained below the 60,000 mark since Oct. 19. Infact, cases have remained below the 50,000-mark for five out of the last seven days. That restricted the rise in active cases, which climbed above 10 lakh in mid-September. They now account for around 6% of the total caseload.

Total recoveries are soon to hit the 80-lakh mark.

While most states reported a fall in active cases, some may be seeing a new wave of infections. Delhi, for instance saw 1,599 more active cases this morning as per the Health Ministry’s website. Haryana has 735 more active infections - the second largest spike next to the national capital.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Sunday said the national capital has hit the peak of the third wave of Covid-19 and the number of cases suggests it has been the worst so far. The government has increased the number of beds for Covid-19 patients in hospitals in Delhi, but there is no plan to rope in hotels and banquet halls, the minister said.

"The third wave of Covid-19 is at its peak in Delhi. The number of cases suggests it is the worst wave so far. But the cases will come down soon," Jain said.
