Confirmed cases of Covid-19 continued to rise in India albeit at a slower pace, defying concerns that the festive season could lead to an influx.

India added 45,674 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 85,07,754 in the world’s second-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Nov. 8. This took the active cases to 5.12 lakh in the country.

Key figures:

  • Total confirmed cases: 85,07,754

  • Total number of active cases: 5,12,665

  • Total patients cured/discharged/migrated: 78,68,968

  • Total deaths: 1,26,121

  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 45,674

  • One-day recoveries: 49,082

  • One-day deaths: 559

The nation with 1.3 billion people is only behind the U.S. in the number of confirmed infections. Daily additions have remained below the 60,000 mark since Oct. 19. That restricted the rise in active cases, which climbed above 10 lakh in mid-September. They now account for 6% of the total caseload.

While most states reported a fall in active cases, some may be seeing a new wave of infections compared to recoveries. Delhi, reported the biggest spike in active cases at 536, followed by Haryana and Himachal Pradesh’s 356 and 353 cases, respectively.

Maharashtra’s active cases fell by 2,939, the most among all Indian states, followed by West Bengal with a decline of 469 cases.

Total recoveries in Maharashtra also jumped by 6,748, in a biggest single-day spike among states. This is followed by a one-day rise of 6,338 recoveries in the national capital.

Global Update:

Globally, the confirmed coronavirus cases surpassed 49.7 million, including more than 1.24 million deaths.

As U.S. virus cases break daily records, deaths are rising: the nation counted 1,153 on Friday, the fourth day this week with more than 1,000, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg. That’s almost 100 a day more than the previous week and 31% higher than average daily deaths in the first week of October.

Italy reported new 39,811 coronavirus cases setting a third consecutive day with record infections. The country reported 425 fatalities versus 446 Friday.

France reported 86,852 new cases on Saturday, the third consecutive daily record. That’s more than the trailing seven-day average of about 54,000, which itself has doubled in little more than two weeks.

The Australian city’s residents will be allowed to travel freely to other areas of Victoria state as the “ring of steel” surrounding the Melbourne will be lifted following more than a week without new coronavirus cases.

Third Wave Of Covid-19 In Delhi Worst So Far; Cases To Come Down Soon: Health Minister

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Sunday said the national capital has hit the peak of the third wave of Covid-19 and the number of cases suggests it has been the worst so far.

The government has increased the number of beds for Covid-19 patients in hospitals in Delhi, but there is no plan to rope in hotels and banquet halls, the minister said.

"The third wave of Covid-19 is at its peak in Delhi. The number of cases suggests it is the worst wave so far. But the cases will come down soon," Jain said. The minister attributed the increase in the number of cases to aggressive testing and contact-tracing.

He, however, said laxity on the part of the people has been a major reason behind the spike in new cases. "Some people think nothing will happen to them if they don't wear a mask. They are wrong. Mask is the only medicine for Covid-19 till a vaccine is developed," Jain said.
