Active coronavirus cases in India declined further even as the country flagged off the world's biggest vaccination drive on Saturday.

India reported 13,788 new cases in a matter of 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data as of 8 a.m. on Jan. 18. That’s lower than the 14,457 patients who recovered from the virus in the same time period, taking active cases below 2.1 lakh. India had over 10 lakh live infections in mid-September.

They account for less than 2% of India’s total confirmed cases.

The U.K. will step up its mass vaccination program this week as the country shuts its borders to anyone who hasn’t tested negative. U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s promise of delivering 100 million vaccine doses in 100 days is “absolutely a doable thing,” Dr. Anthony Fauci said. The U.S. stepped up its claims that the virus could have emerged from a Chinese laboratory.

Brazil granted approval for the emergency use of AstraZeneca Plc and Sinovac Biotech Ltd. vaccines. South Korea reported the lowest number of new cases in seven weeks.

Health Worker Dies In Moradabad Day After Receiving Covid Shot

A 46-year-old health worker died here a day after receiving the coronavirus vaccination, officials said on Monday.

While Mahipal's family is blaming the death on vaccination, the authorities said that he suffered from a cardiac disease. According to sources, he was working as a ward boy in the surgical ward of the Moradabad government hospital. He was vaccinated on Saturday and was not feeling well, they said.

Mahipal's son Vishal said his father called him to hospital as he was suffering from laboured breathing.

"My father had a cough but after the vaccination he was suffering from fever and laboured breathing. On Sunday, he was admitted to the government hospital where he died at night," Vishal said.

Chief Medical Officer Milind Chander Garg cited a postmortem report and said that the cause of death was cardiac disease.

The CMO said that some employees were suffering from fever after the vaccination but denied reports of any other side effects.

Over 2.2 Lakh People Vaccinated So Far, Three Hospitalised: Manohar Agnani

Total number of Indians vaccinated against the coronavirus rose to 2.24 lakh on Sunday evening, according to a press briefing by Manohar Agnani, additional secretary for the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Only six states conducted Covid-19 vaccination sessions on Jan. 17, he said. In 553 sessions, about 17,072 people were vaccinated.

Of the 2.24 lakh people vaccinated in two days, a total of 447 adverse events have been reported, of which only three required hospitalisation, said Manohar Agnani.

  • One is under observation in AIIMS Rishikesh.
  • Majority of the adverse events following immunization are minor in nature and may include, pain, mild swelling at injection site, mild fever, body ache, nausea, giddiness, and mild allergic reactions like rashes, etc.
  • AEFI may or may not be related to vaccine or vaccination process.
