India’s confirmed Covid-19 cases continued to rise, even if so at a slower pace, as the country embarks on the fifth phase of reopening the economy.

India added over 63,000 fresh cases in 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 14. This includes over 64 lakh recoveries and over 1.12 lakh dead.

A slower pace of daily infections and an improved recovery rate has pushed active cases in India lower, close to 8 lakh from over 10 lakh in mid-September.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 73,70,468
  • Active cases: 8,04,528
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 64,53,779
  • Deaths: 1,12,161
  • Fresh cases in 24 hours: 63371
  • One-day recoveries: 70,338
  • One-day deaths: 895

New cases remained below the 70,000-mark for five straight days.

Meanwhile, the central government is in its fifth phase of reopening a contracting economy.

Cinemas in several parts of the country opened after seven months on Thursday with a few film enthusiasts venturing warily into movie watching in a Covid-19 contact-less era of alternate seating, 50% capacity and packaged snacks. While theatres and multiplexes remain closed in states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Chhattisgarh, they opened in several places, including Delhi and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, with stringent dos and don'ts in keeping with the new normal.

Global Update

The U.K. government imposed tougher curbs on London while France set a curfew in Paris as more European nations reported some of the highest number of new cases since the outbreak’s peak in spring. France led the increase in cases. Spain is planning to shut down bars and restaurants in an area that includes Barcelona.

Globally, confirmed Covid-19 cases neared the 38.7 million mark with 1.09 million dead.
