Covid-19 cases in India continue to rise at a hastened pace amid the third phase of reopening the economy.

India added over 52,000 fresh cases in a matter of 24 hours, taking the total tally to over 18.5 lakh in the world’s third-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Aug. 4. This includes over 38,900 deaths and 12.3 lakh patients who have recovered.

India has added over 3 lakh cases in just six days. However, fresh cases have also dropped to the lowest in six days.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 18,55,745
  • Active cases: 5,86,298
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 12,30,509
  • Deaths: 38,938
  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 52,050
  • One-day recoveries: 44,306
  • One-day deaths: 803

The rise in cases can be partially attributed to the increased rate of testing. The total number of tests carried out in India for detection of Covid-19 has crossed the two-crore mark, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research data. Over 6.6 lakh samples were tested just yesterday.

While the country is consistently adding over half a lakh of cases everyday and active cases are about to hit the 6 lakh mark, recoveries are also on the rise.

The 44,306 recoveries reported over 24 hours is the second highest such figure reported so far.

Global Update

California and Arizona reported fewer new cases after battling a surge in infections last month, while Hong Kong said it had the fewest number of new cases since July 22. Mexico’s new infections fell. The U.K.’s plans to block further coronavirus spikes allow for ministers to lock down London, Boris Johnson’s spokesman said.

Globally, total conformed cases topped 18.1 million with deaths exceeding 691,000 as of today morning.
