Confirmed coronavirus cases in India rose past the 92-lakh mark, at a time when state governments are stressing on the need to maintain their guard against Covid-19.

India reported 44,376 new cases in 24 hours, taking the total tally near 92.2 lakh in the world’s second-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Nov. 24. That includes over 86.4 lakh recoveries and more than 1.4 lakh deaths.

Active cases rose above 4.4 lakh today, after falling to 4.3 lakh yesterday. India reported a higher number of fresh cases compared to recoveries for the third time in a week, raising concerns of a renewed surge.

India is currently in a flux of re-opening and implementing stricter guidelines as local governments implement their own strategies to fight an impending second/third wave of the virus, even as they await a vaccine.

"The second wave of Covid-19 is coming and we are restoring life to normalcy with appropriate precautions as per the Centre's instructions,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said in a video conference call with the Prime Minister and seven other states with high infection rates. On the other hand, the national capital is already in the midst of its third wave. Delhi’s schools are unlikely to reopen until a vaccine is available, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said yesterday.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the state cannot lower its guard against Covid-19 even after a vaccine is available to fight the viral infection.
