Coronavirus India Updates: India Tops 10 Lakh Covid-19 Cases; Over 25,000 Dead

India entered the ‘million cases club’ with its total confirmed Covid-19 cases crossing past the 10-lakh mark today.

Authorities reported nearly 35,000 cases in just 24 hours, taking the total tally to 10,03,832, according to the Health Ministry’s 8 a.m. update on July 17. Of these, more than 6.3 lakh have been cured or discharged, while over 3.4 lakh are active cases.

This is the third straight day that the country’s fresh cases have hit a new high. India reported over 34,000 cases for the first time today.

Uttarakhand Considering Weekend Lockdown In View Of Spike In Covid Cases

The Uttarakhand government is considering the option of sealing the state's borders with neighbouring states and imposing complete lockdown in the state on weekends in view of the surging cases of Covid-19, an official spokesman said here on Friday.

The chief minister has asked Chief Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh and Health SecretaryAmit Negi to seriously consider taking all steps to contain the spread of the virus including sealing the state's borders with neighbouring states and imposing a complete lockdown on Saturdays and Sundays if necessary, the spokesman here said.

However, Rawat has asked the officials to be lenient with people coming to Uttarakhand for important work or those who have bookings in hotels. Movement of such people can be allowed with certain conditions, he said.

There has been a spike in Covid-19 cases in Uttarakhand over the past oneweek. As many as 120 cases were reported on July 12, 71 on July 13, 78 on July 14, 104 on July 15 and 199 on July 16.

Madhya Pradesh Assembly Monsoon Session Deferred Due To Covid-19 Pandemic

The Madhya Pradesh Assembly's Monsoon session, which was scheduled to begin here from July 20, has been postponed in light of the coronavirus pandemic, an official said on Friday.

The decision to defer the session was taken unanimously at an all-party meeting on Friday chaired by pro- tem speaker Rameshwar Sharma, the Assembly official said.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Leader of Opposition Kamal Nath and Home and Legislative Affairs Minister Narottam Mishra, among others, he said.

The decision will be forwarded to the governor for approval, he added.

After U.S., India Has Done Most Covid-19 Tests: White House

After the U.S., which has carried out a record 42 million Covid-19 tests, India has done the second largest number of 12 million coronavirus tests, the White House has said.

More than 3.5 million people have tested positive with the coronavirus and 138,000 died in the U.S. Globally, more than 13.6 million have tested positive and over 586,000 have died.

With regard to (the coronavirus) testing, we've done more than 42 million tests. The second-highest number is 12 million from India. We're leading the world in testing, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.

The White House was responding to questions related to the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S.
