Covid-19 cases in India crossed 71 lakh, climbing at the fastest pace in the world, even as the outbreak shows signs of slowing.

India added over 66,000 fresh cases in 24 hours taking the total tally to more than 71 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 12. This includes more than 1.09 lakh deaths and nearly 61.4 lakh who have recovered.

Active cases have now fallen for the 9th straight day and are below the 8.7 lakh mark after reaching as high as 10.17 lakh in mid September.

Key figures:

Still, India is on track to overtake the U.S. (77.5 lakh cases) as the country with the most cases. That comes when the nation is preparing for the fifth phase of unlocking the economy by allowing schools, cinemas and entertainment parks to reopen from Oct. 15.
