India continues to add new coronavirus cases at a record pace just as the nation announced the fourth phase of lifting lockdown restrictions to revive an economy that’s headed toward a rare annual contraction in more than four decades.

India added over 78,000 cases in 24 hours, for the second day in a row, taking the total tally to more than 36.2 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Aug. 31. This includes over 64,000 deaths and over 27.7 lakh patients who have recovered.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 3621245
  • Active cases: 781975
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 2774801
  • Deaths: 64469
  • Number of fresh cases in 24 hours: 78512
  • One-day recoveries: 60868
  • One-day deaths: 971

The second-most populous nation with 1.3 billion people is only behind the U.S. and Brazil in the total number of confirmed infections. The active cases curve, however, seems to be flattening as recoveries rise.

This comes as India announced its ‘Unlock 4’ phase where metro rail will be allowed to operate in a graded manner effective Sept. 7, in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs. These add to the list of activities allowed in the first and second phases.

Global update:

Covid-19 infections worldwide surpassed 25 million, as India set a global record for daily cases and the U.S. tally approached the 6 million mark amid outbreaks on college campuses.

Indonesia saw infections spike over the weekend, while an outbreak in South Korea showed signs of easing. The U.K. added the most cases since early June amid slumping approval ratings for Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party.

Globally, the total number of cases top 25.1 million, including more than 844,000 dead.
