India’s total Covid-19 tally crossed 56 lakh even as the pace of the pandemic’s spread slowed down.
The country added a little over 83,000 new cases in a matter of 24 hours taking the total tally above 56 lakh in Asia's third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Sept. 23. This includes more than 45 lakh patients who have recovered and over 90,000 deaths.

Active cases dropped further to 9.68 lakh to constitute just 17% of the total case load. Recoveries make up 81% of the tally, while the fatality rate remains below 1.6%.
Global Update
The U.S. death toll from the novel coronavirus exceeded 200,000, a grim milestone that comes eight months after the pathogen was first confirmed on American soil.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new restrictions that are likely to last six months and urged residents to work from home where possible. U.S. President Donald Trump assailed China for the pandemic in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly. China’s Xi Jinping pushed back.
Iran reported its biggest spike in daily cases since the pandemic began, while France’s infections jumped after a weekend lull. South Korea reported more than 100 new cases for the first time in four days.
Globally, cases topped 31.4 million, while deaths exceeded 967,000.
Daily Fresh Cases, Recoveries Off Peak
Fresh cases of Covid-19 in India have dropped off the peak witnessed earlier this month. India added less than 90,000 infections for three straight days.
The daily recovery rate too dropped below 90,000 after recording a peak of over one lakh on Tuesday.
