India witnessed a drop in fresh Covid-19 cases and deaths in a small relief to a healthcare system battling the world’s fastest spreading outbreak.

3.66 lakh people tested positive for the virus in 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s 8 a.m. update on May 10, after four consecutive days of more than 4 lakh new infections.

Daily death rate too dropped below 4,000 after two days. 3,754 patients succumbed to the illness in 24 hours, taking the nation's total death toll to 2.46 lakh.

To be clear, data on Covid cases and related deaths may be severely deficient as several states have inadequate testing, chronic underreporting and have been reportedly concealing such data by attributing the casualties to other causes.

Key data points:

  • Total confirmed cases: 2,26,62,575
  • Total number of active cases: 37,45,237
  • Total patients cured/discharged: 1,86,71,222
  • Total deaths: 2,46,116
  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 3,66,161
  • One-day recoveries: 3,53,818
  • One-day deaths: 3,754
  • Total vaccination shots administered: 17,01,76,603

The Delhi government extended curbs in the national capital by another week, citing the lockdown’s success in bringing down the positivity rate. “ Keeping in mind the safety of our people, this lockdown will be stricter than before,” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a statement.

Uttar Pradesh, too, announced an extension to the ‘partial corona curfew' imposed in the state till May 17.

India's Testing And Vaccinations Lag Rise In Cases

India is testing and vaccinating its citizens at a lower rate compared with recent months even as infections and deaths surge.

Cases have risen 3.6 times in the last one month and deaths 6.3 times, while testing has increased only 1.5 times and daily vaccine doses fallen 38%, Bhramar Mukherjee, a professor at the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan, wrote on Twitter.
