Coronavirus India Updates: Active Covid-19 Caseload Inches Up; Nearly 78 Lakh Vaccinated

India's active coronavirus caseload inched up even as the total number of vaccinations neared the 78-lakh-mark.

India added 12,143 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total count to just under 1.09 crore, according to the health ministry's update as of 8 a.m.

Total number of active Covid-19 cases rose marginally to 1.36 lakh, as the number of new cases exceeded recoveries. 103 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the nation's death toll to 1.55-lakh-mark.

State-Wise Trend

The Union Health Ministry said 81.93% of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in six states.

Kerala has reported the maximum number of single-day recoveries, with 5,332 newly-recovered cases. A total of 2,422 people have recovered in Maharashtra in the past 24 hours, followed by 486 in Tamil Nadu.

A total of 12,143 daily new cases registered in a span of 24 hours, it said, adding 86.01% of the new cases are from the six states.

Kerala continues to report the highest daily new cases at 5,397, followed by Maharashtra with 3,670, while Tamil Nadu reported 483 new cases.

Further, 103 deaths were recorded in a span of 24 hours. Six states account for 80.58% of the new deaths.

Maharashtra saw the maximum of 36 casualties. Kerala follows with 18 daily deaths, while Karnataka and Punjab reported eight deaths each.

No New Covid-19 Deaths In 17 States, Union Territories

The distribution of daily deaths among states and union territories in a span of 24 hours reflected a significant decline, with 17 of them not reporting any new Covid-19 fatality, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.

A total of 17 states and union territories that have not reported any new deaths in the last 24 hours are:

  • Telangana

  • Odisha

  • Jharkhand

  • Puducherry

  • Chandigarh

  • Nagaland

  • Assam

  • Manipur

  • Sikkim

  • Meghalaya

  • Ladakh

  • Mizoram

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands

  • Tripura

  • Lakshadweep

  • Arunachal Pradesh

  • Daman and Diu

  • Dadra and Nagar Haveli

While a total of 13 states and union territories have reported between one and five new deaths due to Covid-19.

Meanwhile, India has vaccinated close to 80 lakh beneficiaries against the virus, the ministry said. Eight states account for 60% of the total beneficiaries vaccinated in India. These eight states have vaccinated over 4,00,000 beneficiaries each. Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for 10.8% (8,58,602 beneficiaries) of the total beneficiaries in India.

Global Death Toll Surpasses 23-Lakh Mark

Globally, the number of coronavirus cases exceeded 10.8 crore, while deaths passed 23 lakhs, as of Saturday morning.

The U.S. has administered 5.01 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine in the two months since rollout of the shots began, according to data compiled by the Bloomberg Vaccine Tracker. Schools should use masks and social distancing to safely resume in-person learning as soon as possible, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Friday.

President Joe Biden ruled out requiring passengers on domestic flights to have a Covid test. The World Health Organization hasn’t ruled out any hypotheses about the roots of Covid-19, according to the group’s chief. The comments appeared to pull back from an earlier rejection of speculation that the virus could have leaked from a lab.

South Korea is easing social distancing rules, allowing longer operating hours for some businesses to help out the country’s mom-and-pop stores. Chinese scientists refused to share important data with World Health Organization investigators looking into the origins of Covid-19, the New York Times reported.

Covid Vaccinations Near 78-Lakh-Mark

India has so far vaccinated 77.66 lakh beneficiaries.

About 58.65 lakh healthcare workers and 19 lakh frontline workers have been vaccinated so far, according to the health ministry. 24 deaths have been recorded till date post vaccination.

The government has set a target of innoculating 30 crore people - a fifth of the country's population - against the virus by August.
