Coronavirus India Updates: Active Cases Rise; Over 94 Lakh Vaccinated
India's active coronavirus caseload rose for the fourth time in five days, at a time when the government has already claimed success over the virus.
India added 12,881 new cases in 24 hours according to the health ministry's update as of 8 a.m on Feb. 18. That’s higher than the 11,987 recoveries in the same period, taking active cases lower to 1.37 lakh.
Authorities reported 101 deaths during the same time period, taking total fatalities to over 1.56 lakh. This accounts for 1.42% of the total 1.09 crore coronavirus cases detected in India.
Eighteen states and Union Territories, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh, have not reported any death due to Covid-19 in the 24 hours before the Union health ministry's statement on Wednesday evening.
At the same time, 94,22,228 beneficiaries have been vaccinated so far with over 4.2 lakh of them receiving their shots in the last 24 hours. India is currently focused on vaccinating its healthcare and frontline workers.

The European Commission secured hundreds of millions of additional doses and vowed to speed the clearance of vaccines targeting coronavirus variants.
The United Nations is pushing for a worldwide vaccination effort. In the U.K., scientists are set to carry out the world’s first study to deliberately expose volunteers to the new coronavirus to speed research.
Globally, confirmed Covid-19 cases have topped 109.8 million with 2.4 million dead. More than 181 million have been given vaccination shots so far.
