Coronavirus India Updates: India Reports Over 72,000 New Cases, 459 Deaths

India reported the biggest jump in new coronavirus cases in nearly six months, while the death toll rose to the highest in nearly four months.

72,330 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, according to the health ministry's update as of 8:00 a.m. That's the highest daily addition since Oct. 11.

The daily death toll spiked to 459, the highest single-day addition since Dec. 6.

Maharashtra Accounts For 55% Of New Cases

11 states reported over 1,000 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the health ministry's data.

Maharashtra remained the hotspot, accounting for 39,544 of the 72,330 new cases reported across the country. Karnataka and Chhattisgarh reported over 4,000 new infections.

Global Update

Globally, coronavirus cases passed the 12.8-crore mark, while deaths exceeded 28-lakh mark, as of Thursday morning.

The Canadian province of Ontario, home to Toronto and the capital Ottawa, will be locked down for 28 days to fight the spread of the virus, CBC News said. Brazil detected a new Covid-19 variant, similar to the one found in South Africa, as it again reported record deaths.

France will impose a four-week lockdown from Saturday, and Italy extended restrictions on movement and business openings. They’re the latest signs Europe is yet again losing control of the pandemic.
