Coronavirus India Updates: Fresh Infections Highest Since Christmas

India reported its biggest single-day spike in fresh Covid-19 cases in over two months.

The country detected more than 23,000 fresh infections in the last 24 hours -- for the first time since Christmas -- according to the health ministry's 8:00 a.m. update on March 12.

That’s lower than the 15,000 recoveries reported during the same period, taking active infections above 1.9 lakh. Fatalities related to the disease stood at 117.

Indian authorities have administered nearly 2.62 crore vaccination shots so far with 4.8 lakh beneficiaries getting inoculated in just the last 24 hours.

Global Update

President Joe Biden said he wants U.S. states to make all adults eligible for coronavirus vaccinations by May 1, accelerating efforts to end the pandemic.

Thailand will temporarily halt the use of AstraZeneca Plc vaccines until there’s more clarity from investigations of possible blood clots. The European Union’s drugs regulator has said the benefits of Astra’s vaccine outweigh the risks. The Philippines sees no reason to stop its rollout.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says Auckland will move to alert level 1 at midday Friday, meaning social distancing requirements will be lifted.

Globally, Covid-19 cases topped 118.4 million with more than 2.6 million dead from the infection. Over 334 million vaccination shots have been administered worldwide.
