The Covid-19 death toll in Uttar Pradesh rose to 6,882 on Sunday with 28 more fatalities, while 2,052 fresh cases pushed the infection tally to 4,70,270, an official said.

"In past 24 hours, 2,368 patients were discharged."

Recovery Rate Touches 90% In India

With a total of 70,78,123 people having recuperated from Covid-19, the national recovery rate for the disease has touched 90%, while 62,077people have recovered in a span of 24 hours against 50,129 new cases of the infection reported in the same period, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.

This achievement is matched by the downward spiral fall in the number of active Covid-19 cases, maintained below the seven-lakh mark for the third successive day, it said.

"The total recoveries exceed active cases by64,09,969 as on date," it said. Less than 1,000 deaths have been continuously reported for the last one week.

There are "merely" 6,68,154 active Covid-19 cases in the country as on date, which accounts for 8.50% of the total caseload, it said.

Also, 75% of the new recoveries were observed to be concentrated in 10 states and Union territories — Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Maharashtra leads the tally with more than 10,000 single-day recoveries.

Besides, 79% of the 50,129 fresh Covid-19 cases were reported from 10 states and Union territories. Kerala continued to report a very high number of fresh cases with more than 8,000, followed by Maharashtra with over 6,000, the ministry said.

Mizoram To Shut Reopened Schools On Rising Covid-19 Cases

The Mizoram government has decided to shut all schools that were reopened for students of classes 10 and 12 due to the rising number of locally transmitted Covid-19 cases and because some pupils have tested positive for the infection, Education Minister Lalchhandama Ralte said on Sunday.

The schools, that were reopened for the students of the two classes on Oct. 16, besides hostels, will remain closed from Monday as the state will observe ‘Covid-19 no tolerance fortnight’, he said.

If the pandemic situation improves and the chain of local transmission is broken during the drive, the schools and hostels are likely to reopen on Nov. 9, the minister said.

Registrations for next year's board examinations are under process and online classes will continue, he said.

Coronavirus Daily Update

India added less than 60,000 fresh Covid-19 cases for the seventh straight day, defying concerns that the festive season could lead to an influx.

India added 50,129 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 78,64,811 in the world’s second-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 25. This includes 1,18,534 deaths and 70,78,123 patients who have recovered.

Key figures:

  • Total confirmed cases: 78,64,811

  • Total number of active cases: 6,68,154

  • Total patients cured/discharged/migrated: 70,78,123

  • Total deaths: 1,18,534

  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 50,129

  • One-day recoveries: 62,077

  • One-day deaths: 578

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, a total of 10,25,23,469 samples have been tested up to Oct. 24. Of these, 11,40,905 were screened on Oct. 24 itself.

The nation with 1.3 billion people is only behind the U.S. in the number of confirmed infections. New cases have been falling in India for nearly a month. Daily additions have remained below the 90,000 mark since Sept. 21.

The slower pace of daily infections and an improved recovery rate kept active cases in India below the 7-lakh-mark for the third straight day. That’s just 8.5% of the total caseload. India’s active cases had crossed 10 lakh in mid-September.

India—fighting the worst economic downturn in decades—has now restarted most activities to revive consumer sentiment and growth. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, however, warned masses to maintain precautions. “The lockdown may have ended, but the virus is still around us,” he said in an address to the nation on Thursday. “Recent images and videos show many people may have become careless. Not wearing a mask or taking adequate precautions will put your family at risk.”

Global Update:

Globally, coronavirus cases have passed 42.4 million, with deaths exceeding 1.1 million.

Marc Short, Chief of Staff of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, has tested positive for the Covid-19, the White House has said, becoming the latest top official to have contracted the deadly disease. The vice president and the second lady have tested negative, it said.

New York and New Jersey reported the most new Covid-19 cases since May, while daily infections across the U.S. reached a record of more than 83,000. President Donald Trump blamed the surge on testing.

The U.K. reported 23,012 new cases, marking the fifth straight day with more than 20,000. About a quarter of the U.K.’s 854,010 cases have been reported in the past 10 days.

Brazil’s death count declined for the fifth straight week, despite a slight increase in cases reported in the seven days that ended Saturday, according to data from the Health Ministry.
