Coronavirus India Updates: Lowest New Cases In Nearly 3 Months; Tally Nears 76 Lakh
Confirmed Covid-19 cases in India are now near the 76-lakh mark even as active infections peaked in September.
Authorities reported over 46,000 cases in 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Oct. 20. That’s the lowest new cases reported in a day since July 23 when the government reported 45,720 cases.
The slower pace of daily infections and an improved recovery rate has kept active cases in India below the 8 lakh mark for four consecutive days. India's active caseload had crossed 10 lakh in mid-September. In a presentation, the Covid-19 Supermodel Committee led by M. Vidyasagar said this was the peak in active cases and that India may be able to contain the world’s second-largest outbreak by February.
“If the model is correct, we may have reached herd immunity” with 380 million people already infected, the committee said.

Discussions to open up travel for business purposes continue to take place in Asia, with the governments of Japan and China reportedly close to an agreement to resume business travel between the countries as soon as this week.
