Confirmed Covid-19 cases in India are now near the 76-lakh mark even as active infections peaked in September.

Authorities reported over 46,000 cases in 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Oct. 20. That’s the lowest new cases reported in a day since July 23 when the government reported 45,720 cases.

The slower pace of daily infections and an improved recovery rate has kept active cases in India below the 8 lakh mark for four consecutive days. India's active caseload had crossed 10 lakh in mid-September. In a presentation, the Covid-19 Supermodel Committee led by M. Vidyasagar said this was the peak in active cases and that India may be able to contain the world’s second-largest outbreak by February.

“If the model is correct, we may have reached herd immunity” with 380 million people already infected, the committee said.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 75,97,063
  • Active cases: 7,48,538
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 67,33,328
  • Deaths: 1,15,197
  • Fresh cases in 24 hours: 46,790
  • One-day recoveries: 69,720
  • One-day deaths: 587

The fatality rate remains low when compared to other countries at 1.52%. Recoveries make up for more than 88% of the Covid-19 pie.
