Coronavirus India Updates: Nearly 40,000 Fresh Infections In 24 Hours

Fresh cases of Covid-19 in India rose to the highest since November, taking active infections above 2.7 lakh once again.

Authorities detected nearly 40,000 new cases in the last 24 hours, for the first time since Nov. 30, 2020, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on March 19. The country reported more than 20,000 recoveries in the same period.

More than 150 people lost their lives to the disease in a day, taking the total coronavirus-related fatalities above 1.59 lakh.

India has administered more than 3.9 crore vaccination shots since the immunisation drive began in January. Over 22 lakh beneficiaries were given the jab in the last 24 hours.

President Joe Biden announced the U.S. on Friday will clinch his goal of administering 100 million Covid-19 vaccine shots in the first 100 days of his presidency, reaching the mark six weeks ahead of time. More U.S. states announced all adults would be eligible for the vaccine before Biden’s May 1 target.

The Paris area faces a four-week lockdown starting Friday to contain what it called a third wave of the coronavirus epidemic. European Union nations, including Germany, France, Italy, will restart the AstraZeneca Plc Covid-19 vaccine after the EU’s drug regulator said it’s safe to use, though it warned it can’t completely rule out a link to blood clotting side effects.

Globally, Covid-19 cases topped 121.7 million with more than 2.68 million dead. Over 410 million vaccine shots have been administered worldwide.
