Total confirmed cases of Covid-19 in India crossed 52 lakh, raising concerns that the second-most populous nation will soon overtake U.S. to become the world’s worst hit.

The country added more than 96,000 infections in a matter of 24 hours, taking the total case count above 52 lakh, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Sept. 18. This includes more than 41 lakh patients who've recovered and over 84,000 deaths.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 52,14,677
  • Active cases: 10,17,754
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 41,12,551
  • Deaths: 84,372
  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 96,424
  • One-day recoveries: 87,472
  • One-day deaths: 1,174

Fresh cases dropped marginally from the peak recorded on Thursday, but India continued to report the highest number of daily additions witnessed by any country.

The share of active cases, however, has fallen below 20% as recoveries now account for more than 78% of the total case load and the fatality rate remains less than 1.7%

Global Update

Global Covid-19 infections exceeded 30 million, with more than 943,000 dead, as the number of cases continued to climb, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The U.S., India and Brazil remain the countries with the highest number of cases.

Moderna, as well as Pfizer and its partner BioNTech SE, took the unusual step of releasing their plans for analysing vaccine-trial data, amid concern that the race for a safe and effective product is being politicised.
