Coronavirus India Updates: Active Cases Decline; Over 75 Lakh Vaccinated

One-day deaths and active cases of coronavirus declined in the last 24 hours, a day after a marginal uptick, as the country makes progress in its inoculation drive.

India reported 87 casualties in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 1.55 lakh in the world’s second-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Feb. 12, 2021.

India also reported 9,309 fresh Covid-19 cases, which is significantly lower than the 15,858 recoveries reported in the day. This led to a active infections falling below 1.4 lakh for the first time since June 11, 2020

Active cases have declined significantly after crossing 10 lakh mid-September. They account for a mere 1.31% of the total Covid-19 caseload. That’s lower than deaths which account for 1.43%.

The number of healthcare and frontline workers vaccinated against Covid-19 has reached over 75 lakh after the nationwide inoculation drive began on Jan. 16. The health ministry said India is the fastest country to reach 60 lakh vaccinations, achieving it in just 24 days.

Australia’s second-most populous state will enter a five-day lockdown after a spike in cases, with movements in Victoria to be restricted from late Friday night. The decision is likely to affect the Australian Open tennis tournament underway in the capital of Melbourne.

President Joe Biden announced that the U.S. has finished deals for 100 million additional vaccine doses each from Pfizer and Moderna Inc., and that the companies would deliver new and existing orders quicker than projected.

Over 107.7 million people have contracted the Covid-19 virus so far with 2.3 million deaths. More than 159 million vaccination shots have been given worldwide.
