Active coronavirus cases in India continued to fall, in a positive turn for the country with the second most cases in the world, falling below the 9 lakh-mark for the first time in a month.

India added over just over 70,000 fresh cases in 24 hours taking the total tally past 69 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 9. This includes over 1.06 lakh deaths and over 59 lakh patients who have recovered.

The country is likely to hit the 70-lakh mark by Sunday.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 69,06,151
  • Active cases: 8,93,592
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 59,06,069
  • Deaths: 1,06,490
  • Fresh cases in 24 hours: 70,496
  • One-day recoveries: 78,365
  • One-day deaths: 964

The drop in fresh cases, coupled with the rise in recoveries has led to a significant decline in active cases. India reported 10.17 active cases on Sept. 18, which has fallen below the 9 lakh mark now.

This means active cases now stand for merely 13% of India’s Covid-19 cases pie. Recoveries make up for 86% and fatality rate stands at 1.5%.

The central government is pushing its fifth phase of ‘Unlock India’ which includes partial reopening of schools and multiples starting Oct. 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the first phase of reopening the economy in May. The country, already having contracted nearly 24% in the April-June quarter, is headed for a rare annual contraction too.

Global Update

China joined a World Health Organization-backed initiative to ensure everyone across the globe is inoculated against Covid-19, without saying how much money it plans to put into the $18 billion project. Indonesia reported the highest increase of new cases since the start of the pandemic.

Globally, coronavirus cases have topped 36.4 million with 1.06 million of them dead as of Friday morning.
