Coronavirus India Updates: Active Cases Fall; Nearly 90 Lakh Vaccinated

No Covid-19 Deaths In Last 24 Hours In 18 States, UTs: Health Ministry

Eighteen states and Union Territories, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh, have not reported any death due to Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the Union health ministry said on Wednesday.

India's cumulative recoveries have been showing a progressive increment on a daily basis, the ministry said.

"Eighteen states/UTs have not reported any COVID-19 death in the last 24 hours. These are Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Puducherry, Himachal Pradesh, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Ladakh, Assam, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu," the ministry said in a statement.

India's active coronavirus caseload fell after rising for three consecutive days, at a time when the government has already claimed success over the virus and has vaccinated nearly 90 lakh people.

India added 11,610 new cases in 24 hours according to the health ministry's update as of 8 a.m on Feb. 17. That’s lower than the 11,833 recoveries in the same period, taking active cases lower to 1.36 lakh.

Authorities reported 100 deaths during the same time period, taking total fatalities to over 1.55 lakh. This accounts for 1.43% of the total 1.09 crore coronavirus cases detected in India.

At the same time, 89,99,230 beneficiaries have been vaccinated so far with over 2.76 lakh of them receiving their shots in the last 24 hours. India is currently focused on vaccinating its healthcare and frontline workers.

Global Update

Japan began its vaccination program, which will start with a group of about 20,000 health-care workers who will be observed over the course of their two shots and after. Australia’s Melbourne will lift its five-day lockdown as planned, Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews said. Some restrictions on visitors to the home will remain, as will rules on mask-wearing

Meanwhile, New Zealand reported two new community cases of Covid-19 just hours before Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is due to decide whether to extend a lockdown in largest city Auckland.

Globally, total confirmed Covid-19 cases have topped 109.4 million with 2.4 million dead. More than 181 million have been given vaccination shots so far.
