Active Covid-19 cases in India continued to drop, indicating the pandemic may be receding, at a time the country has begun the world’s largest inoculation drive.

The world’s second-worst infected nation added less than 12,000 fresh cases in 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Feb. 6, 2021. That’s lower than close to 15,000 recoveries reported during the period, taking active cases to under 1.50 lakh.

Active cases, now 1.4% of the total caseload, had crossed 10 lakh in mid-September.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 1,08,14,304
  • Active cases: 1,48,590
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 1,05,10,796
  • Deaths: 1,54,918
  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 11,713
  • One-day recoveries: 14,488
  • One-day deaths: 95

Nearly 50 lakh healthcare workers have been vaccinated throughout India, but that’s just a little over half the targeted number of people. Many at the frontlines of the pandemic are refusing Bharat Biotech’s shot — a hesitation that’s largely being blamed on the hasty approval of the vaccine, which is still deep in Phase III trials.

Meanwhile, India is set to receive the most number of Covid-19 vaccine doses in the initial distribution from the World Health Organization’s Covax initiative, despite the fact that India’s supply of shots currently outstrips demand.

When might life around the world return to normal? In 7.4 years at today’s vaccine rates.
