Coronavirus cases continued to rise as India entered the Diwali weekend that has triggered concerns of a spike in cases as crowds throng markets to prepare for festivities.

Daily additions have remained below 50,000 for seven consecutive days now, keeping active cases below the 5-lakh mark for the fourth straight day.

Active cases had climbed above 10 lakh in mid-September. Daily recoveries have also declined but remain higher than fresh cases.

Globally, cases crossed 5.33 crore while deaths closed in on 13 lakh, as of Saturday morning.

The U.S. broke a record again Friday for daily Covid-19 infections, reporting 178,807 new cases, and states were clamping down.

New York City will close schools if the infection rate reaches 3%. Oregon will impose a two-week “freeze,” restricting retail, restaurants, gyms and gatherings. New Mexico ordered non-essential businesses shut. Wyoming may impose its first state mask mandate.

President Donald Trump dismissed the notion of a lockdown in his first public comments in eight days, contrasting with President-elect Joe Biden’s call for an “immediate federal response” to the surge.
