Coronavirus cases continued to rise as India entered the Diwali weekend that has triggered concerns of a spike in cases as crowds throng markets to prepare for festivities.

India added over 44,500 fresh cases in a matter of 24 hours, taking the total tally to nearly 88 lakhs in the world’s second-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Nov. 14. That includes 81.6 lakh recoveries and 1.29 lakh deaths.

Daily additions have remained below 50,000 for seven consecutive days now, keeping active cases below the 5-lakh mark for the fourth straight day.

Active cases had climbed above 10 lakh in mid-September. Daily recoveries have also declined but remain higher than fresh cases.
