India’s confirmed Covid-19 cases cross the 72-lakh mark even as average daily cases are on the decline.

India added over 63,000 fresh cases in 24 hours taking the total tally to nearly 72.4 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 14. This includes more than 1.10 lakh deaths and over 63 lakh who have recovered.

Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan yesterday claimed that average daily new cases are on a decline for the last five weeks. They have declined from 92,380 between Sept. 9 to Sept. 15 to about 70,114 between Oct. 7- Oct. 13, he said.

India’s daily positive rate -- the number of people that test positive out of the total tested -- stands at around 5.16%.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 72,39,389
  • Active cases: 8,26,876
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 63,01,927
  • Deaths: 1,10,586
  • Fresh cases in 24 hours: 63,509
  • One-day recoveries: 74,632
  • One-day deaths: 730

A slower pace of daily infections and an improved recovery rate has pushed active cases in India below 8.3 lakh from over 10 lakh in mid-September.
