Coronavirus India Updates: Over 68,000 New Cases Added, Highest Since October

Biggest Single-Day Spike Since October

India reported 68,020 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, according to a health ministry update on Mar. 29 morning.

This marks the biggest single day spike in new cases since Oct. 12.
32,231 patients recovered and 291 deaths were reported.

Maharashtra Reports Over 35,000 New Cases; Mumbai Adds 6,100

Maharashra continued to remain India's Covid hotspot, reporting over 35,000 new infections for the third consecutive day.

The western state added 35,726 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking its total caseload to 2.67 lakh, according to the health ministry.

The state's capital, Mumbai, reported 6,123 fresh Covid-19 cases, the highest rise in a day so far, taking the caseload to 3.91 lakh, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said in a statement.

Maharashtra Records Highest Positivity Rate

Eight states and union territories have a weekly positivity rate of coronavirus infection higher than the national average of 5.04%, with Maharashtra recording the highest rate at 22.78%, the health ministry said on Sunday.

Apart from Maharashtra, the other seven states and UTs with higher positivity rate than national average are:

  • Chandigarh: 11.85% positivity rate
  • Punjab: 8.45%
  • Goa: 7.03%
  • Puducherry: 6.85%
  • Chhattisgarh: 6.79%
  • Madhya Pradesh: 6.65%
  • Haryana: 5.41%

On the testing front, 15 states/UTs have lower tests per million than the national average (1,74,602). These states include Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, the Health ministry said.

Vaccination Coverage Crosses 6-Crore Mark

Indian authorities administered over 6 crore Covid-19 vaccines across the country, out of which 21.54 lakh jabs have been given in the last 24 hours, , the health ministry said.

India's coronavirus death toll crossed the 300-mark for the first time in over three months.

India reported 312 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the nation's death toll to over 1.61 lakh, according to health ministry data as of 8:00 a.m.

At 62,714 new Covid-19 cases, daily additions remained the highest since Oct. 17. That's also more than double the 28,739 patients who recovered in the same period. The total number of active cases rose to 4.86 lakh.

Global Update

Globally, coronavirus cases passed 12.65 crore, while deaths exceeded 27 lakh, as of Sunday morning.

China has administered more than 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines as the country speeds up its inoculation efforts. The pace of U.S. vaccinations has also picked up, with 75% of the population on track to be vaccinated within four months.

But in a setback, the U.S. added almost 79,000 Covid-19 cases in a day amid evidence in some states that infections are shifting to under-30s.
