Coronavirus India Update: Daily New Case Load Inches Toward 50,000 Again

India’s coronavirus outbreak is showing signs of resurgence soon after a busy festive season, even as new cases slowed down in the recent weeks.
India reported 46,232 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 90.5 lakh in the world’s second-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Nov. 21. That includes nearly over 84 lakh recoveries and 1.32 lakh deaths.
Active cases, that have fallen from a peak of over 10 lakh in mid-September, are starting to rise again as new infections outpace recoveries. The country’s active case tally stood at 4.39 lakh as of Saturday morning.
Rising Covid cases have prompted some state governments to impose partial restrictions once again. In Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara cities a night curfew has been imposed where no movement is allowed between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
A similar curfew has been put in place between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in Madhya Pradesh's Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, Vidisha and Ratlam.
Meanwhile, the city of Mumbai has decided to keep schools shut till Dec. 31, 2020 as it anticipates another wave of cases. Schools have been allowed to open for classes 9-12 on a voluntary basis from Nov. 23 in the rest of Maharashtra.

Global Update
Globally, cases crossed 57 million, leaving over 1.3 million dead, as of Friday night.
Canada warned of a case surge unless there are new curbs. England’s infection rate continued to rise but the pace has leveled off in recent weeks. The number of U.S. hospital beds occupied by Covid-19 patients rose this week to the highest since April.
Pfizer and BioNTech have said they plan to file on Friday for an emergency use authorisation that could allow their Covid-19 vaccine to be used in the U.S. next month.
