Coronavirus India Update: Active Cases Rise For Fourth Straight Day To 1.64 Lakh

Concerns about a second wave persist as India adds active Covid-19 cases for fourth straight day.

Fears of a second Covid-19 wave and restrictions persist with India's active cases of coronavirus rising for the fourth straight day even as immunisation continues.

The nation reported 16,752 new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, according to the health ministry's update as of 8 a.m. on Feb. 28. That’s higher than the recoveries during the period, taking active cases to more than 1.64 lakh. India reported more than 16,000 fresh cases for the fourth straight day. 113 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

Rising active cases come when India is now looking to inoculate senior citizens and those above the age of 45 with comorbidities in the second phase of vaccination starting March 1. Authorities have administered vaccines to nearly 1.5 crore healthcare and frontline workers.

Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine was approved by the U.S., making it the third vaccine now available in that nation.

Vaccination gains momentum in Asia-Pacific as Thailand began its inoculation programme on Sunday using the Sinovac Biotech Ltd. product. Australia received 300,000 doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca shot. , part of plans for the country to scale up its rollout effort.

Cases exceed 113.7 million worldwide, including 2.5 million deaths. More than 236 million vaccine shots have been given worldwide.
