Fresh Covid-19 cases in India exceeded daily recoveries after six days amid concerns over a third wave though the nation has increased the pace of vaccination.

India added 12,729 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 3.43 crore in the world’s second-most populous country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Nov. 5.

Key figures:

  • Total confirmed cases: 3,43,33,754

  • Total number of active cases: 1,48,922

  • Total patients cured/discharged/migrated: 3,37,24,959

  • Total deaths: 4,59,873

  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 12,729

  • One-day recoveries: 12,165

  • One-day deaths: 221

A rise in fresh infections slightly pushed up the active cases, still below 1.5 lakh. Active cases constitute 0.43% of India’s total Covid caseload, while recoveries constitute 98.2%.

Meanwhile, India has vaccinated 107.7 crore people, with 5.65 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry data showed. Total number of tests done during the previous day was 6.71 lakh.

The World Health Organization has granted emergency use authorisation for Bharat Biotech's Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin.

This will help expedite global access and availability of Covaxin worldwide, the company said in a statement. Countries can now expedite their regulatory approval processes to introduce and administer Covaxin. It also allows procurement by Unicef, PAHO, and the GAVI COVAX facility for distribution to countries in need.

Other vaccines in use are Serum Institute’s Covishield, developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca. Russia’s Sputnik V has been administered in small numbers. While shots from Johnson & Johnson and Moderna Inc. have been granted approval, they aren’t being used as of now. The country has also granted emergency-use approval to its first DNA-based three-dose vaccine developed by Cadila Healthcare Ltd.

Global Update:

Globally, the coronavirus cases have topped 24.85 crore, with more than 50 lakh deaths. Over 710 crore vaccine doses have been administered across the world.
