Coronavirus India Latest Updates: Daily Recoveries Beat New Cases For Seventh Day In A Row

Fresh cases of coronavirus in India lagged daily recoveries for the seventh straight day, at a time the nation ramped up its pace of vaccination amid concerns of an imminent third wave that drove fears of a repeat of the recent nightmare of oxygen shortages and overwhelmed hospitals.
India added 22,842 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 3.38 crore in the world’s second-most populous nation, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 3. Single-day additions, however, remained below 30,000 for the ninth day in a row.

A drop in fresh infections dragged the active cases to less than 3 lakh. Active cases constitute 0.8% of India’s total Covid caseload, while recoveries constitute 97.9%.
Meanwhile, India has vaccinated 90.5 crore people, with 73.8 lakh doses administered in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry data showed. Total number of tests done during the previous day was 12.7 lakh.
The country, according to data on the government’s CoWin dashboard, administered 23.64 crore jabs in September, a 23% jump over August. Daily inoculations in India exceeded 1 crore four times during the month.
Still, the increased pace may not be fast enough to fulfill Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aim to vaccinate all the country’s adult population by the year-end. According to Bloomberg’s Vaccine Tracker, less than 15% of India’s population is fully protected.
A new study, according to a Bloomberg report, predicts that India may record an unprecedented 600,000 new infections a day if it fails to boost the pace of vaccination and avert a third wave. The National Institute of Disaster Management predicts a surge in cases as early as October. Daily infections, it said, however, could reduce to 200,000 if the government executes its 1-crore-a-day vaccination plan.
Other forecasters, too, have predicted a new wave, albeit weaker than the previous surge.
The NIDM study even suggested vaccinating children with serious underlying health conditions.
So far India has approved six vaccines to fight against Covid-19. Serum Institute’s Covishield, developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca; and Bharat Biotech Ltd.’s Covaxin are widely used. Russia’s Sputnik V has been administered in small numbers. While shots from Johnson & Johnson and Moderna Inc. have been granted approval, they aren’t being used as of now. The country has also granted emergency-use approval to its first DNA-based three-dose vaccine developed by Cadila Healthcare Ltd.
Global Update:
Globally, the Covid-19 cases have topped 23.45 crore, with deaths near 48 lakh. More than 630 crore shots have been given across the world.
