Covaxin Shelf-Life Extended To 12 Months

Bharat Biotech-produced Covaxin's shelf-life extension to up to 12 months has been approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation.

The vaccine is now good to use for up to 12 months from the date of manufacture. In a release, the company further added that opened Covaxin vials can also now be stored for 28 days.

The extension was approved on the basis of additional stability data provided by Bharat Biotech.

India’s Total Omicron Tally Jumps To 161

Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat reported fresh Omicron cases.

Karnataka reported five new cases on Dec. 19, taking the Omicron tally to 19 in the state. "The five patients are from Dharwad, Bhadravathi, Udupi and Mangaluru," Karnataka Health Minister Sudhakar K said.

Gujarat reported four new cases, taking the tally to 11, PTI reported.

Maharashtra added six new Omicron cases, taking the total tally to 54 in the state.

India’s active caseload accounts for 0.24% of the total tally, while one-day recoveries form 98.39%.

The nation's daily positivity rate stood at 0.75%. It has stayed less than 2% for the last 77 days. The weekly positivity rate at 0.60% remained below 1% for the last 36 days.

Daily fatalities due to Covid-19 in India fell to the lowest in 35 days at a time the new Omicron variant spreads rapidly in the world's second-most populous nation.

Single-day deaths stood at 132, the lowest since Nov. 15, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Dec. 20.

As many as 6,563 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, compared with nearly 8,077 recoveries during the period.
