India’s active Covid-19 cases fell for the ninth straight day even as the Omicron tally rises, prompting the world’s second-most populous nation to advise “profound caution”.

As many as 7,000 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Dec. 19. Fresh infections have been in line with or lagging daily recoveries for nine days in a row, dragging down active cases.

Key Figures

  • Total confirmed cases: 3,47,40,275

  • Total number of active cases: 83,913

  • Total patients cured/discharged/migrated: 3,41,78,940

  • Total deaths: 4,77,422

  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 7,081

  • One-day recoveries: 7,469

  • One-day deaths: 264

India’s active caseload accounts for 0.24% of the total tally, while one-day recoveries form 98.3%.

This, at a time the newly-emerged Covid-19 variant is spreading rapidly in the South Asian nation—that saw the delta-led virus wave overwhelm hospitals and crematoriums earlier this year.

While a prominent epidemiologist, according to a Bloomberg report, said the Omicron variant to likely to be less lethal in India than the prior mutants, the nation of 1.3 billion people has advised people to “avoid non-essential travel and mass gatherings, while focusing on low-intensity festivities”.

Meanwhile, India has vaccinated 137.5 crore people, with 76.5 lakh in the last 24 hours. Total number of tests done during the previous day was at 12.1 lakh.
