Tamil Nadu Reports First Omicron Case

Tamil Nadu has reported its first case of omicron variant of the coronavirus, ANI reported citing State Health Minister Ma Subramanian.

A 47-year-old Chennai man has tested positive upon returning from Nigeria, it said.

West Bengal Extends Covid-19 Restrictions Till Jan. 15 Amid Omicron Concerns

All restrictions related to the movement of people and vehicles in West Bengal have been extended till Jan. 15.

However, the rules will be relaxed between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. for Christmas and New Year celebrations from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1, the state order said.

Late closing of bars and restaurants will also be allowed for the aforementioned dates.

Maharashtra Detects Four More Omicron Cases

Four more patients have been found to be infected with Omicron in Maharashtra, taking the tally to 32.

All four are asymptomatic and quarantined, according to the state health department.

Government To Review Omicron Situation

Situation arising out of Omicron cases to be reviewed during Short Duration Discussion in Parliament today, ANI reported.

India's total Omicron cases tally rose to 57 on Tuesday after Maharashtra reported eight new cases of the new coronavirus variant.

Seven omicron cases are from Mumbai and one from Vasai-Virar, the state health department said. With this the state’s tally of omicron rose to 28.

India's active coronavirus cases fell for the fifth straight day even as the new Omicron variant spreads in the world's second-most populous nation.

As many as 6,984 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Dec. 15. That compares with nearly 8,168 recoveries during the period.

India's active caseload accounts for 0.25% of the total tally.

The nation's daily positivity rate stood at 0.59%. It has stayed less than 2% for the last 72 days. The weekly positivity rate at 0.67% remained below 1% for the last 31 days.
