Coronavirus India Latest Updates: Maharashtra Reports 2 More Omicron Cases; Gujarat Adds 10,000 Deaths

Two More Omicron Cases Reported In Maharashtra

Maharashtra has reported two more Omicron cases in the state, with two people with travel history from Dubai testing positive. There are now a total of 20 omicron cases in the state.

The two patients, one each in Latur and Pune, remain asymptomatic and were fully vaccinated, according to the Maharashtra Health Department.

Gujarat Adds Almost 10,000 Covid-19 Deaths To Tally: NDTV

Gujarat has accepted 10,000 more deaths caused due to the coronavirus after it submitted documents stating that it has given compensation for 19,964 deaths, according to NDTV.

The total number of deaths in the state has so far officially been 10,098, which will now stand nearly doubled after the latest figures.

Gujarat has received 34,678 applications for the ₹ 50,000 compensation and payments have been made only in 19,964 cases, NDTV reported.

First Death Due To Omicron Variant In The U.K. Recorded

The U.K. has recorded its first death due to the omicron variant, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said, the BBC reported.

Omicron Cases Detected In Kerala, Nagpur

First case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus has been found in Kerala and in Maharashtra’s Nagpur city.

Health Minister Veena George confirmed the detection of Omicron case in Kerala, PTI reported.

In Nagpur, a 40-year-old man tested positive for the new coronavirus variant after returning from a West African country, PTI reported citing an official.

Further, in the wake of rising Omicron cases, the Maharashtra government had imposed Section 144 CrPC in Mumbai on Dec. 11 and 12. The state has a total of 18 Omicron cases so far (Mumbai-5, Pimpari Chinchwad-10, Kalyan Dombivali-1, Pune MC-1 and Nagpur-1).

In Chandigarh, a 20-year-old male from Italy who was reported positive for Omicron has now tested Covid negative, state's health department said. The man's seven family contacts who had been quarantined and were negative earlier were retested for Covid -- five tested positive and one negative; one report awaited.

India's active coronavirus cases fell for the third straight day even as concerns around the new Omicron variant loom.

As many as 7,350 people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Dec. 13. That compares with nearly 7,973 recoveries during the period. Daily deaths stood at 202.

Active cases now account for 0.26% of the country's total tally.

India's daily positivity rate stood at 0.86%. It has stayed less than 2% for the last 70 days. The weekly positivity rate at 0.69% remained below 1% for the last 29 days.
