Coronavirus India Cases: Total Death Toll Crosses 3 Lakh Even As Active Infections Drop Below 28 Lakh
A slower spread of the Covid-19 pandemic helped bring India’s active caseload below the 28-lakh-mark, but failed to contain the daily death rate.
Just over 2.22 lakh people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on May 24. Recoveries during the same period were significantly higher at 3 lakh.
As a result, active cases in the world’s second most populous nation dropped to 27.2 lakh—the lowest in a month. That still accounts for more than 10% of the country’s total caseload.
The slower spread did not dent India’s daily fatality rate. 4,454 patients succumbed to the illness in a matter of 24 hours, taking the country’s total reported death toll above 3 lakh.
To be sure, data on Covid-19 cases and related deaths may be severely deficient as several states have inadequate testing, chronic underreporting and have been attributing the casualties to other causes.
