At a few minutes past 6 p.m., with six hours to go before the year turned for Indians, food delivery service Zomato was already clocking its highest ever order velocity. “Our order velocity right now is the highest we have seen in our life so far (~2,500 orders per minute - OPM),” Founder Deepinder Goyal tweeted. He may have also sent up a prayer to the tech gods. “Surpassed India vs Pakistan (cricket match) day wala opm. And it’s only 6pm! I hope our tech lives through this.”

At 6:48 p.m., the orders per minute hit 3,200, he posted on social media. To keep it interesting Goyal has since proceeded to offer quick order updates.

6: 55 p.m.: 169 pizzas got ordered in the last second.

7:03 p.m.: Average order values are skyrocketing as well.

7:05 p.m.: Biryani just sent an update. 2,716 biryani orders were marked “on my way” by our delivery partners in the last 5 minutes.

7: 19 p.m.: There are 1 lakh live orders right now. 1 lakh food deliveries in transit right now - between the kitchens, and the bikes. Never seen this before.

Goyal has currently paused commentary as he had to be somewhere but the orders are no doubt flowing in. With night curfews in many large cities, including Mumbai and Delhi, many are celebrating the onset of a new year at home with friends and family heightening the prospects of record business for food delivery services.

Already Christmas has set the tone. “This Christmas was the biggest ever for food delivery in India,” Goyal said earlier in the day. “We clocked 34% higher GMV (gross merchandise value) than last Christmas.”
