Sex-Ed Federal Funding Sees Jump for Abstinence Programs: Chart

(Bloomberg) -- The thorny topic of sex-ed may be moving back into abstinence-only territory. U.S. funds for that area of adolescent sexual education jumped 55 percent to $85 million in fiscal year 2016 and could grow further under the Republican-controlled Congress, according to the Guttmacher Institute. While federal grants for sex-ed are just a fraction of what state and local governments invest annually, it “sends an important message about our priorities as a nation,” writes Megan K. Donovan, a senior policy manager at the institute’s Washington office, in the article, “The Looming Threat to Sex Education: A Resurgence of Federal Funding for Abstinence-Only Programs?”.
