HCL Tech’s Roshni Nadar Is First Woman To Lead A Listed IT Company In India

Roshni Nadar Malhotra has taken charge of HCL Technologies from her father and Chairperson Shiv Nadar, the company said Friday.

India’s richest woman Roshni Nadar Malhotra has taken charge of HCL Technologies Ltd. from her father and Chairperson Shiv Nadar. In the process, she also became the first woman to lead a listed IT company in India.

Roshni Nadar joined the board of HCL Technologies in 2013 and was vice chairperson before her latest appointment. She will continue as chief executive officer of HCL Corporation, the holding company for all the group entities.

On Friday, HCL Technologies while announcing its June quarter results said Shiv Nadar has stepped down from the chairperson’s role and that the company's board has chosen Roshni Nadar to replace him with immediate effect. Shiv Nadar will continue to be the managing director with the designation as chief strategy officer. HCL Technologies CEO C Vijayakumar said the moves were part of the company's succession plan.

A postgraduate of Kellogg School of Management in the U.S., Roshni Nadar worked with Sky News UK and CNN America as a news producer on basis of her undergraduate qualification from Northwestern University, Illinois. She joined HCL Corp in 2009, and within a year was made executive director and then CEO at the age of 27.

In 2018, she established The Habitats Trust, which aims India's natural habitats and its indigenous species. She has driven transformational efforts in the area of education as a trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation.

According to the latest Hurun Rich List, she is India's richest woman with a net worth of Rs 36,800 crore. She ranked on Forbes' World's 100 Most Powerful Women list in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

A trained classical dancer, Roshni Nadar married Shikhar Malhotra, vice chairman of HCL Healthcare, in 2010 and the couple has two sons—Armaan and Jahaan.
