Twelve days after Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. started charging for outgoing calls, India’s fastest growing telecom operator launched four new plans that bundle in charges for cross-network calls.

Reliance Jio introduced four plans in the range of Rs 222 to Rs 555 that provide users 1,000 to 3,000 minutes of calling to other networks. The Mukesh Ambani-controlled operator is providing two gigabytes of data a day.

The plans are at a discount to Reliance Jio’s other plans with same validity or data allowance. Generally, for every 1,000 non-Jio minutes, a user will have to pay Rs 80 after the operator introduced interconnect usage charge top-up vouchers.

The Mukesh Ambani-controlled telecom firm said on Oct. 9 that it will charge customers 6 paise per minute for voice calls made to other phone networks. Reliance Jio said it “has been compelled, most reluctantly and unavoidably” to do this after the telecom regulator’s decision to review the date for scrapping IUC from Jan. 1, 2020. A telecom operator pays IUC to a rival network for completing calls made by its subscribers.

Paid calls come three years after Ambani promised users at the 2016 launch of Reliance Jio that the operator won’t charge for voice calls.
