Qatar’s Emir to Travel to Rwanda One Day Before GCC Summit
(Bloomberg) -- Qatari ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is scheduled to travel to Rwanda on Monday as Gulf Cooperation Council leaders prepare to meet in Saudi Arabia a day later.
It wasn’t immediately known if the Qatari emir will return to the Middle East to attend the GCC summit on Dec. 10, and if not, who if anyone will represent him.
The emir will attend a ceremony to present an international anti-corruption excellence award in his name in the Rwandan capital Kigali, the state-run Qatar News Agency said.
Qatar’s emir was invited last week by Saudi King Salman to attend the GCC summit in Riyadh. The invitation was seen as a potential breakthrough in intensifying attempts to end a 30-month feud between Qatar and several of its neighbors.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic and trade links with Qatar in 2017 after accusing the gas-rich state of building close ties with their chief regional foe, Iran, and funding militant groups.
