PG&E Warns of More California Blackouts to Prevent Wildfires

California utility giant PG&E Corp. warned that it could blackout customers again this week due to a return of dry offshore winds as the Golden State enters peak wildfire season.

PG&E said that it may need to initiate power cuts to about 29,000 customers in northern and central California starting early Thursday to prevent its power lines from sparking catastrophic fires under gusty conditions.

Meanwhile, the utility said it expects to restore power by late Tuesday to about 24,000 customers who had power cut during high winds on Monday. PG&E has been using the controversial practice of preemptive cutting off power ahead of windstorms after the utility’s equipment started several devastating wildfires in 2017 and 2018.
