Mumbai’s Iconic Victoria Carriages Will Soon Be Back With A Makeover

Mumbai’s iconic Victoria carriages are set to make a comeback, albeit without the horses.

Horse-driven buggies were last seen in 2015 before the Bombay High Court ruled in favour of petitioners fighting against animal cruelty. Now, these vintage carriages will be powered by battery.

The idea is also to keep it eco-friendly with zero fuel usage, said Ketan Kadam, founder and chief executive officer of UBO Ridez—a startup that will roll out the revamped electric carriages.

The initiative has created a buzz with Bollywood actor Dino Morea partnering with UBO Ridez. The idea to spruce up the maximum city’s heritage also saw a push by Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray.

Besides, the company and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation are also reaching out to former carriage drivers who had lost their source of livelihood after the ban was imposed in 2015.
