Mumbaikars Can Expect Heavy Rains Starting June 6, Skymet Says

Mumbai may soon get its share of heavy rains.

At least, that is what weather forecasting agency Skymet is predicting. Sustained heavy rains are likely to begin from a week starting June 6. Extremely heavy showers are forecast for June 8, 9 and 10, Skymet Weather Services’ Founder and Chief Executive Officer Jatin Singh tweeted yesterday. “Warnings should be issued now. Just stay indoors,” he added.

Pre-monsoons arrived in Mumbai on Saturday with most parts of the city witnessing moderate to heavy rains. Chincholi witnesed the heaviest rains (39 mm) between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., followed by Kurla and Kandivali (34 mm each), according to information available on Skymet’s website.

The southwest monsoon, which waters more than half of India’s farmland, arrived on the mainland ahead of its normal schedule. The monsoon reached the southern state of Kerala on May 29, which typically starts on June 1, according to a statement on the India Meteorological Department’s website.
